Cake Sale... watch out for the SUGAR!

Today in work we had a charity cake sale to raise some money for a good cause, lots of people made/bought cakes, which we sold round the office. The sale was a success, which lead me to the conclusion that everybody likes cake!

A lot of cake was eaten today, which means a lot of sugar was consumed! So is all this sugar good for you? Most people will say “No, because it’s bad for your teeth”. Which is very true, however most people may not know the other reason sugar is a big no no...

Excess sugar in the diet gets stored as FAT

Yes you read that right! Sugar is a type of simple carbohydrate: which means that when it enters your body it provides an instant release of energy which your body can use. This is great if you need the energy, i.e. straight after exercise simple carbs are needed to help your body recover. However if your body doesn’t need this energy then what does it do with it? I’ll tell you what it doesn’t do:

  • It doesn’t get rid of it by sweating it out
  • It doesn’t pass anonymously through your system
  • And it definitely does NOT turn into muscle!

Your body is not so wasteful, it will use the excess sugar, but without knowing when your body is going to be fed again it will store the energy from the sugar but will store it as the compound it will get most value for later on:

  • Protein equates to 4 calories per gram
  • Carbohydrate equates to 4 calories per gram
  • Fat equates to 9 calories per gram

So it’s pretty obvious that it chooses FAT! Yes this excess energy your body doesn’t use (sugar) will get stored as fat!

So next time you have a cake day or anything high in sugar remember that excess sugar gets stored as fat, so think about resizing that portion.
